Karen North, R.N., BSN
Karen North is a courageous cervical cancer survivor, a 2019 graduate of Cervivor School, and a 2024 Cervivor Champion. Before her diagnosis, Karen enjoyed a fulfilling life with her family, friends and pets, while dedicating herself to her work as a registered nurse. Her journey took a significant turn in December 2015, when an abnormal Pap test led to a biopsy and a subsequent cervical cancer diagnosis. This came just 18 months after she had already faced and overcome early-stage breast cancer, which resulted in a bilateral mastectomy.
In April 2016, Karen was initially scheduled for a hysterectomy, but the discovery of tumor growth necessitated chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Despite these challenges, Karen emerged as a passionate advocate for HPV prevention and cervical cancer awareness. As a Cervivor Champion, she educates medical professionals and government officials on the critical importance of HPV immunizations and annual exams. Karen's advocacy extends through her collaborations with organizations like the American Cancer Society, Cancer Action Network, and the Missouri Immunization Coalition. She also leads Cervivor PRIDE for fellow cervical cancer survivors that identify as SGM/LGBTQI+. Karen’s journey exemplifies strength, resilience and unwavering commitment to raising awareness and supporting those impacted by cervical cancer.
