How to Look "Dressed" in the Heat

Lifestyle

Imagine it's about 90 degrees outside and as you stare at your closet the only thing that looks appealing is a wispy tank top and a pair of shorts. How do you make your heat-beating, bare essentials look like an outfit?

  1. Accessorize
Your best bets for dressing up a simple look are statement jewelry, sunglasses and belts. Even the simplest outfit can be dressed up with a fantastic necklace and big movie-star shades. Belts in this season's neon shades and animal prints are perfect over light sheath dresses.
  2. Embellish
Adding a hint of metallic sheen or sparkle to your outfit will give it a dressier vibe. Try a metallic sandal or look for tops or dresses with special details like studs, embroidery, sequins or beading.
  3. Top It Off
Hats are chic and they make any breezy outfit seem more put-together. Fedoras add instant downtown-cool; wide-brim versions are always elegant; and even Panama styles and solid-colored baseball hats can be fun to play with. I also love scarves wrapped and knotted around your head with hair in a chignon or in beachy loose waves.
  4. Layer Lightly
It might sound crazy to "layer" when it's sweltering outside, but light, gauzy layers will make you look like you put effort into your ensemble. My favorite pieces for this are a sleeveless trench or a sheer kimono style jacket. Slip a light camisole underneath either garment and you're on your way to a cool yet finished look.
  5. Go Bold
Color and print are game-changers when it comes to giving plain outfits a boost. This season you can find pants and denim in a rainbow of hues. And anyone can pull off a boldly patterned dress; just keep the silhouette classic (A-lines and sheaths are universally flattering). The easiest (and cheapest) way to add a burst of life to your look is to try a bold lip color. You'll be surprised how much more put-together you look with a little lipstick or lip stain. Experiment with fun drugstore varieties until you find one that suits you. I love Revlon's Persian Melon and Colorburst Lip Butter in Candy Apple.
