Geraldine Ferraro, who earned her place in history as the first woman vice-presidential candidate on a national party ticket, has joined the board of the nation's leading women's health information center.

"Ms. Ferraro brings an enormous range of talents and expertise to the Center at this important point in our development," said Amy Niles, its Executive Director. "She has spent her life working for the rights of women and she understands the need for women to set new goals and break through old barriers. We know she will be an incredible asset as our Center expands its efforts."

Ferraro was first elected to Congress from New York's Ninth Congressional District in Queens in 1978 and served three terms in the House of Representatives. Before entering politics, Ferraro taught elementary school in the New York City Public Schools for five years. During that time, she also put herself through Fordham Law School at night. After spending 13 years at home raising her three children, she joined the Queens County District Attorney's Office. There, she started the Special Victims Bureau, supervising the prosecution of sex crimes, child abuse, domestic violence and violent crimes against senior citizens.

"I am pleased and honored to be asked to serve on the board of the Center. I look forward to working with the board and staff to ensure that women have the information they need to take care of their health. Education and information are the keys to the future of women's health," said Ms. Ferraro.

Ms. Ferraro is now president of G & L Strategies counseling clients on a broad range of issues. She is also an affiliated faculty member of the Georgetown Public Policy Institute.
