Here's the scenario: You're driving to your in-laws when you unexpectedly run into a backup on the highway. You've made it 10 miles in two hours and your stomach is growling. Your options: fast food or the mini-mart at the gas station. I say opt for the
latter.
If you can look past the candy bars and greasy chips, you might just find a healthy snack option. Here are five you can usually count on:
Nuts: I've never been in a gas station that didn't have peanuts. According to Planters, peanuts are an important source of plant-based protein and essential vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. They also can give us the boost we're looking for in an afternoon pick-me-up. Almonds, walnuts or trail mix will do the trick as well.
Part-skim string cheese: Get some extra calcium and protein on the go with this tasty treat.
Fresh fruit: Most gas station stops will have at least one fruit option. Usually it's an apple, orange or banana, all of which are packed with vitamins and nutrients to help you get through the rest of that road trip. If you can't find fresh fruits, some stores carry fruit smoothies in the refrigerator section.
Granola or protein bars: Gas stations usually have a selection of snack bars. Try and select one that is high in fiber and low in sugar.
Yogurt: If you need a dairy fix, reach for the yogurt instead of the ice-cream sandwich for a dose of calcium and healthy bacteria. Read the labels and look for options that are low in sugar.
Also, don't forget to drink water during long car trips. Sometimes thirst can be disguised as hunger, and staying hydrated is important to staying awake and alert behind the wheel.
