It is widely known that eating a diet full of whole foods, including lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes, is best for fending off many types of diseases, and cancer is no exception. Think more veggies, less meat; more whole grains, less refined carbohydrates.
Start with these Cancer-Fighting Foods:
Cruciferous Vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts, bok choy and kale)
Studies have found that the phytochemicals in this family of vegetables can reduce risk by fighting the growth of cancer cells. Eating them raw or lightly steamed is best for retaining all the beneficial nutrients.
Garlic and Onions
These allium vegetables contain sulfates that are believed to block cancer in a number of ways, including inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. Combine them with a little oil for better absorption. Bonus: add some tumeric, a spice found to have cancer-fighting antioxidants.
Beans
High in fiber, beans help the body to eliminate unhealthy substances that can be cancer causing. It also helps keep your digestive track healthy, which can lead to better overall health too. Don’t forget that whole grains are fiber-filled as well.
Tomatoes
Containing the antioxidant lycopene, tomatoes have been found to lessen the risk of a variety of illnesses, including cancers of the prostate, breast and pancreas. This one is best for you when cooked.
Berries
Berries are full of antioxidants, which fend off cellular damage and reduce inflammation, lowering the risk of many forms of cancers. Try strawberries, blackberries, blueberries or raspberries.
