5 Reasons You Can Lose Weight With Peanuts

Among the benefits of eating peanuts is one that resonates with nearly everybody (and makes everyone happy, if they love—and previously eschewed—peanuts): peanuts can help with weight loss.

No, I'm not going to present yet another crazy fad diet, like eat unlimited amounts of peanuts and peanut butter and you're guaranteed to drop 10 pounds in one week.

Eating peanuts while you're trying to lose weight seems like an oxymoron, right?

When I told my friend Isabelle about the connection, she eyed me skeptically. So I told her to make sure to read this post for some solid information. And, besides that, there's a chance for her—and any of you—to win some yummy peanut products, including red-skin peanuts, boiled peanuts, peanut flour and a gourmet peanut spread. (I feel like Forest Gump when I write this. Only with him, it was shrimp...pan-fried, deep-fried, stir-fried…pineapple shrimp, shrimp salad, coconut shrimp…I think he left out shrimp with peanuts).

But before I tell you how to enter the contest, let me tell you how peanuts can help weight loss.

  • Since peanuts and peanut butter are packed with fiber and protein, they keep you satisfied and full for a long time, helping to manage your hunger.
  • Because of their protein and fiber, peanuts and peanut butter will stick with you for about 2 1/2 hours vs. the half hour you'll get from high-carbohydrate foods, according to one study.
  • Peanuts can increase your metabolic rate. When researchers studied resting energy expenditure on peanut and peanut butter eaters, they found that it was 11 percent greater after regular peanut consumption for 19 weeks compared to the baseline.
  • The fat in peanuts (the "good fat") provides satiety and taste satisfaction, so you don't feel deprived.
  • Since peanuts stabilize your blood sugar with their low glycemic index (meaning they are digested more slowly and release sugar gradually into the bloodstream), they provide long-lasting energy and decrease cravings.

My family recipe for tuna salad includes peanut butter. My daughters in law refuse to use it, saying it is bizarre, but tuna salad just doesn't get any better than when you add a couple of spoons of peanut butter along with the mayo and relish.

(We also make peanut butter sandwiches with bannanas or with cucumbers, which makes some people raise eyebrows.)

Adding a bit fresh ground peanut butter to (vegetarian, but I expect it's work with meat too)chili gives body and a nice depth to the spicy tomato base

sprinkling fresh peanuts over pasta, especially pasta primavera

I agree, Kerry. I always am relieved to find peanut butter on the table - it comes in handy in case I don't like anything else, or need a big protein boost. Thanks for sharing your recipe ideas. I especially love the pasta combo.

My daughter makes a peanut butter banana split using a whole wheat tortilla (or pita) slathered with peanut butter, banana slices and a little drizzle of honey. Roll it up and you can carry it anywhere.

I'm happy to hear about the health benefits of peanuts. We use them anywhere/everywhere we can. My hubby makes a mean bbq sauce by starting with a cup of 100% cranberry juice and boiling it down until it halved (good for your urinary tract!), then he adds about 1 1/2 of our favorite bbq sauce, mixing it, then finishes it off with a tablespoon of peanut butter to cut the sweetness. Add salt and pepper to taste and you've got a tangy sauce for dipping or slathering.

I could go on, but I'm sure you can tell, I love peanuts;)

Oh, you do that TOO? Something about that is just plain irresistible, isn't it?

One expert also told me that a portion of nuts pass through your body unabsorbed, so you don't consume all of their calories. I think nuts definitely can help with satiety and weight loss, you just have to be very, very careful not to have more than a handful!

I never heard that, Nancy; how interesting. I wonder if it is true. And although it's tempting to take more than a handful, it's amazing how a handful can be satisfying.

I like to add peanuts to green salad that's topped with strawberries and onions. The combination of peanuts, onions and strawberries really adds flavor to the salad, especially with a good quality balsamic vinaigrette dressing.

I can't imagine peanut butter with tuna salad as Vera described. Guess I'll need to try it.

Glad you packed your post with so many peanut facts. Many people swear off nuts thinking it'll make them fat. When, in fact, they're healthy and, unless you eat the entire can, they can promote satiety.

I find that a handful of nuts can satiate me when I'm hungry between meals, so this makes sense.

Can I share my son's recipe for a peanut-peanut butter and jelly? He spreads peanut butter on one piece of bread and jelly on another. Then he covers the peanut butter with a layer of roasted peanuts and tops it with the jelly slice. Crazy kid.

Peanut butter on the breakfast table? What a wonderful idea. So glad to hear something I love -- and eat, anyway -- is healthy. That almost never happens to me.

Funny, when I'm crazy snacky a PB sandwich will always stop the junk food cravings!

cook up some pancakes take a short stack spread peanut butter on top pancake thin top with your favorite fruit or jelly.

Peanuts are the best I'm gonna start eating them with every thing

In the last few months I had begun to consume more nuts and peanuts (a legume) as well. I also maintain a low-cab diet and exercise five days a week at the gym walk, bike, am active, etc. Weight loss was not my goal and so I was thrilled that on my new diet I also lost weight considerably and looked much better and the clothing too looked much nicer on me. But then, I kind of cut out the peanuts for whatever reason and I gained five pounds within a week! Now, I have reincorporated the peanuts and am hoping that it does its magic. I came to this site when I googled "Peanuts and weight loss" as I was curious about my weigh gain once I stopped eating peanuts. Will know soon if indeed, the claims made in this space are true. Hope they are. Who doesn't want to lose weight?

Hi, I was reading your post on peanuts and weight loss and thought great the secret is out. Peanuts will make you lose weight quickly. Why? When we eat fat it tells the body to burn fat, however when we eat carbs it tells the body to store fat. It's just that simple. I eat 1-1/2 bags of wonderful sweet chili pistachios everyday as a snack. The more I eat the more I lose, and those things are loaded with calories. Enjoy your peanuts!

I've been trying to gain some weight recently, and I knew peanuts were calorie-dense so I've been eating them a lot. One night, while I was in a munchie-bloodlust, I had a crazy toffee-peanut binge. I woke up the next morning weighing a pound less than the morning before. What the hell peanuts? I thought you were supposed to make me big. Plus I'm drinking like half a gallon of 2% milk every day, and it ain't doing nothing. Should I eat a bunch of fast food and try to get my BMI out of the 17's? Probably not, cause the first day I eat 2000 calories instead of 5000 I'll lose two pounds. I know I could drop my activity level and probably step up a few pounds but I don't wanna.

I was reading your post and thought I would give you a tip. If your trying to gain weight, Don't Eat Peanuts! It's fat, fat burns fat. If you want to gain weight eat potatoes, pasta and rice. Carbohydrates sends a signal to store fat and when we eat fat it sends a signal to burn fat. I eat peanuts daily and the more I eat the more I lose. Hope thus helps.

Actually I was told potatos make you gain also. I did research on it and Potatos arent as bad as people say. If eaten in moderation and not dipped in grease they can actually help you loose weight as they have fiber and vitamins.

I think your on the wrong track. The website says
5 Reasons You Can """Lose Weight""" With Peanuts though what you are doing is to ""GAIN WEIGHT"" which is totally different thing.

LOSE WEIGHT -for people like me to reduce fat
GAIN WEIGHT -for people like "YOU" who wants to gain weight
(people who are thin and make themselves fat).

I started to skip lunch and just ate a little bowl full of in-shell peanuts. Three big meals a day was too much for me so I cut back by portion control on breakfast and dinner. Peanuts kept me full and also decreased cravings for junk. Key is to maintain it and feel great.

OK, I love Peanut butter,Love Tuna, love Mayo, love Relish, but combining them ... hmmmmmm questionable...A wonderful friend of mine who is no longer with us wld always say, "Don't knock it until you try it"... So maybe I'll try one little bite...and if I really like it I'll say "Who Knew" lol

love u all guys... peanuts is my the favourite snack... and i am also trying to loose weight. since the winter started i was literally stopping myself from eating peanuts just because as all of them say peanuts are high in calorie. every evening i was fighting with my peanuts cravings... but not anymore ..with so many people vouching for eating peanuts for weight loss .. has definitely given me a hope to loose weight alongwith my childhood love peanuts :-)

I only buy to type that has peanuts and less than 1% salt as the ingredients. Regular peanut butter has added oils and sugars.
